Bart, for example. A Polish entrepreneur who designed and built his own home at Graven Hill, he explains: “Each house was unique and reflected the individuality of its occupants. I’m quite used to self-build, which is very popular in Poland and it made me realise how much I wanted the freedom to design my own legacy.”
Bart moved his bespoke joinery business from London to Oxfordshire in September 2020. Drawn to Graven Hill’s distinctive architecture, he was immediately reminded of the self-build culture prevalent in his home country. The development’s commitment to individual expression resonated deeply with him, leading to the purchase of Plot 250, a 327 sq. m serviced self-build plot. His home is a testament to creative design, featuring a dramatic charred timber façade using the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique. With cantilevers, a rooftop terrace, and a balcony, the house reflects Bart’s personal vision.
Jitinder’s story began with a passion for Grand Designs and a desire for a truly personalised home. Moving from a two-bed flat in Reading, he discovered Graven Hill almost by chance. His three-storey, 204 sq. m home, named “HARI haus,” is a marvel of modern design and forward-thinking architecture. Consulting with 12 different architects, Jitinder meticulously planned every detail of his forever home. The house features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and innovative design elements like built-in ceiling blinds and potential lift installation. He chose a unique “manly mauve” and grey silicon render with darker grey timber cladding, creating a striking exterior that stands out in the community.
Graven Hill offers something extraordinary and Jitinder perfectly captures the community spirit: “I knew more people in Graven Hill after living here a few months than I did in Reading for 27 years. We have people here with a similar mindset and are go-getters.”
