Bart & Klaudia
Contemporary three-storey home with charred timber façade, created without an architect and showcasing extraordinary craftsmanship
Originally from Poland, Bart was drawn to Graven Hill’s individuality and architectural freedom, reminiscent of self-build culture back home. Together with his wife Klaudia, he relocated from London after discovering the development while searching for a home closer to his Oxfordshire-based joinery business.
The couple initially bought a custom-build home at Plot 100, but quickly progressed to undertaking their own self-build on Plot 250. Their home stands out with bold cantilevers, a rooftop terrace, and a Shou Sugi Ban cladding that both protects and elevates the design.
Bart handled every aspect of the home’s design and delivery himself, taking a CAD course and using his trade experience to source materials and finishes. The result is a warm, minimal interior using natural textures like timber, stone, and polished plaster.
Living on site with their young child allowed Bart to manage the build while running his bespoke joinery business, which he’s since expanded to offer timber cladding services. The couple have also invested in Graven Hill buy-to-let apartments, believing in the lifestyle the development offers.
